Should You Buy the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt or the 2026 Trax? A Practical Head-to-Head

Two of Chevrolet's most accessible vehicles serve very different purposes. The 2027 Bolt is a fully electric five-seat hatchback with an estimated 422 km of range, a native NACS charge port, and 1,594 litres of max cargo volume. The 2026 Trax is a compact gas-powered crossover with a taller ride height, a lower entry price, and no charging infrastructure to think about. They're not fighting for the same buyer — but if you're deciding between an EV and a subcompact SUV, this comparison lays out exactly where each vehicle earns its place.

Here's how they stack up across the categories that matter most.

Powertrain: Electric vs Gasoline

The Bolt runs a 65 kWh battery with a GM-estimated range of 422 km on a full charge. It supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW — a major improvement over the previous generation — and can go from 10% to 80% charge in approximately 26 minutes at a compatible public charger. The native NACS charge port gives it access to a wider public charging network than earlier EV designs. Home charging via the included Dual Level Charge Cord or an available Level 2 NACS charger handles most daily routines without any stop at a public station.

The Trax runs Chevrolet's 1.2L Turbo I-3 producing 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque paired with a CVT. Fuel economy is rated at 8.5 L/100 km city and 7.6 L/100 km highway. There are no charging considerations, no range anxiety, and no infrastructure dependency — you stop at any gas station in Canada and keep moving.

If your daily commute is under 200 km and you have access to home charging, the Bolt is a strong fit. If you regularly drive long distances or don't have reliable home charging, the Trax removes those variables entirely.

Interior and Technology

Both vehicles come with an 11-inch touchscreen infotainment system and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Bolt adds Google built-in as standard, embedding Google Maps with real-time range integration — when you plan a route, the map accounts for battery level and flags charging stops if needed on longer drives. The Trax's 11-inch display arrives on LT and above; the base LS ships with a smaller screen.

The Bolt includes heated front seats and a heated steering wheel as standard on both LT and RS trims. The Trax offers heated seats and steering wheel on select trims but not universally across the lineup. The Bolt's 8-way power driver seat is standard. Active Noise Cancellation is standard on the Trax.

Both vehicles run the full Chevrolet Safety Assist suite: Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert, and IntelliBeam auto high-beam control. The Bolt adds Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Reverse Automatic Braking, and Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking as standard.

Size, Cargo, and Everyday Practicality

The Bolt is a hatchback format — lower to the ground and more car-like than the Trax — but it carries more cargo than its footprint suggests. With 458 L behind the rear seat and 1,594 L with the seats folded flat, the Bolt has a slight cargo edge over the Trax. An additional 113 L of underfloor storage below the cargo floor adds useful space for charging cables and small items you want out of sight.

The Trax offers 725 L behind the rear seat and 1,532 L with the 60/40 split-folding rear seat down. Its taller ride height and more upright loading position make it easier to slide large or heavy items in without bending low. For buyers who regularly load bulky gear, the Trax's raised liftover and SUV-style opening is a practical advantage the Bolt's hatchback format doesn't match, even if the Bolt's total folded volume is slightly larger.

Rear legroom is 993 mm in the Bolt — slightly more than the Trax's 983 mm — giving adult rear passengers a comfortable seat on either vehicle. Both seat five.

Which One Is Right for You?

The 2027 Bolt is the right call for buyers who want to eliminate fuel costs, have home charging available, and do most of their driving within the city or on regular commutes well under the 422 km range estimate. The technology stack is strong, the standard content is generous at both trim levels, and the 26-minute fast-charge window makes longer occasional trips manageable with some planning.

The 2026 Trax is the right call for buyers who want a higher ride height, more cargo flexibility, and no charging infrastructure dependency. It's a straightforward gas vehicle with a practical interior and a price point that makes it accessible across the lineup.

These two vehicles serve different lifestyles. The best way to know which fits yours is to drive both.
