GM just pulled the wraps off the next generation of its full-size trucks, and Ontario shoppers cross-shopping the Silverado and Sierra have a lot of new material to sort through. Engines, screens, and off-road hardware all move forward at once.

This breakdown separates what genuinely changed from what carries forward, so you can figure out which truck, and which trim, actually fits how you use one.

New V8 Power and a TurboMax Upgrade

Both trucks drop their outgoing 5.3L and 6.2L V8 options in favour of new sixth-generation Small Block engines in 5.7L and 6.6L displacements. GM says the 6.6L is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class, and both the Silverado and Sierra get it.

The 2.7L TurboMax carries over as a four-cylinder option but now pairs with a 10-speed automatic and delivers what GM calls best-in-class standard torque. The segment-exclusive 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel continues as the fourth powertrain choice on both trucks.

For buyers who tow regularly, that diesel continuation matters more than the new V8s. It is still the only diesel in the segment, and GM did not touch that positioning for 2027.

Fresh Sheet Metal and a Fully Digital Cockpit

The Silverado gets a new front fascia, bolder LED lighting signatures, and more pronounced wheel opening moldings. Dual exhaust is now standard on Custom trim and above, a visible upgrade for shoppers who used to need a higher trim for that detail.

Inside, every Silverado trim gets a standard 16.3-inch centre touchscreen and a 12.2-inch driver information centre, replacing the old split between base and upgraded dash layouts with one digital cockpit across the lineup. On ZR2 and High Country, a front passenger screen and head-up display join those two, with the ZR2’s head-up display measuring 11.5 inches.

The Sierra gets its own new face too, with evolved headlamp and taillamp signatures and a more vertical grille. Redesigned interiors run across every Sierra trim, and the Denali Ultimate flagship carries the same 16.3-inch touchscreen and 12.2-inch driver display, plus a 15-inch head-up display, an articulating front passenger screen, and a 16-speaker Bose Premium audio system.

High Country separates itself further with a Tritan Satin grille, a panoramic sunroof, real wood décor, and standard 22-inch wheels. That’s a lot of flagship-grade material stacked onto Chevrolet’s top trim.

Two Off-Road Lineups, Two Different Toolkits

Silverado now offers three lifted trims: ZR2, Trail Boss, and Custom Trail Boss. ZR2 sits at the top with standard front and rear e-lockers, a dedicated off-road hood, and Multimatic DSSV dampers riding on 35-inch MT tires. Trail Boss runs 34-inch MT tires and its own dedicated off-road hood. Custom Trail Boss shares that 2-inch lift and 34-inch tire size but skips the special hood, keeping its price point lower.

Sierra’s AT4X counters with front and rear e-locking differentials, Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers, and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. GMC will keep offering its AEV Edition package on AT4X for buyers who want to push further into serious off-road builds.

Z71 also becomes its own standalone trim on Silverado rather than a package, and it now includes standard skid plates and hill descent control instead of requiring an add-on.

What Stays the Same

Both trucks keep four powertrain choices rather than narrowing the lineup, and the Duramax diesel option continues unchanged in its segment-exclusive positioning. The basic trim logic also holds: work-focused trims anchor the bottom of each lineup while off-road and luxury trims sit at the top.

GMC’s AEV Edition package for AT4X is a straight continuation, not a new item for 2027. If you already know that package by name, it is not going anywhere.

What the Changes Mean for Silverado and Sierra Shoppers

If you tow often and want maximum standard torque without stepping up to a V8, the enhanced TurboMax paired with the 10-speed answers that directly on either truck. If you need dedicated diesel range and towing manners, the Duramax option on both trucks still covers that job.

For off-road buyers, the choice comes down to hardware feel. Silverado’s ZR2 pairs DSSV dampers with 35-inch MT tires and a purpose-built hood; Sierra’s AT4X pairs its own e-lockers and Jounce Control Dampers with 35-inch Goodyear tires and the AEV Edition path for buyers who want to go further. Neither setup is a downgrade from the other; they’re two different off-road philosophies under the same corporate roof.

For flagship-trim shoppers, Silverado High Country leans into cabin materials, a panoramic sunroof, and 22-inch wheels, while Sierra Denali Ultimate leans into screen technology with its 15-inch head-up display and 16-speaker Bose system. A buyer who prioritizes trim and finish fits High Country; a buyer who wants the most digital cockpit on offer fits Denali Ultimate.

Value-minded shoppers land on Silverado Custom or Work Truck, or Sierra Pro or Elevation, all of which now inherit the shared 16.3-inch display and 12.2-inch cluster that used to be reserved for pricier trims.

Getting a Closer Look at the 2027 Silverado and Sierra

The 2027 Silverado and Sierra bring new V8 power, a shared digital cockpit standard across every trim, and two distinct off-road toolkits in ZR2 and AT4X. Full specifications and pricing are expected to follow later this year, ahead of both trucks reaching dealerships as 2027 models.
